Mathematics for the Science
of
Complex Systems

Warwick University, Monday 11th – Friday 15th September 2006

You cannot be a competent complex systems scientist without being able to read mathematics (see Course Philosophy). This course is intended to open the door to mathematics to those who thought it was closed, empowering them to use mathematics comfortably in their own research. No previous specialised mathematical knowledge is expected. The course is designed to take those with minimal mathematical ability to the frontiers of complex systems science. It has no prerequisites beyond students having good study skills.

Researchers from any discipline can apply, including doctoral students working in social, physical and engineering science. Post-docs and mature researchers may also find the course useful.

Course Summary

The 100-hour course addresses the need for new postgraduate education in the mathematics of complex systems, accessible to students working in a wide variety of complex systems across the social, physical and engineering sciences. It teaches how mathematics works and how mathematicians work, giving an overview of a wide range of mathematical concepts and results, enabling students to apply mathematics in their own research. We aim to enable all students to work comfortably and creatively with mathematicians as part of a multidisciplinary team.  There is a five day residential school preceded by six sessions studying e-delivered preparatory materials. Students prepare a poster before the school describing their research problem, and a prize-poster at the end suggesting how mathematics might be applied in their research.

We aim to create a network of young complex systems scientists and mathematicians able to work in teams, as the leaders of the complex systems community in decades to come.  Support and advice will be available after the course.  Optional assessment and a certificate of attendance will be available.

The course tuition is free.  Participation in the course will be assessed and a certificate given.

Bed and breakfast for four nights costs £120 + VAT (shared bathroom) or £200 + VAT (en-suite). Support may be available for those without EPSRC Doctoral Training Accounts.

The course is limited to twenty students. Applications should be made to the Course Director, Professor Jeffrey Johnson at j.h.johnson@open.ac.uk, copied to Angie Swain at a.s.swain@open.ac.uk. Inquiries may be made by phone (UK: 01908-652627, Abroad: +44-1908-652627). You should include your name, address, email, telephone number, one-page curriculum vitae showing any mathematics courses or qualifications, a half page statement of why you want to do the course,  and the full names, positions and email addresses of
two referees (supervisors for PhD students). If you do not get an acknowledgment within a few days please resend it. Students requesting financial assistance should explain why their institutions can't support them.
